What is CIPN?

Chemotherapy is used to target cancer cells, but it can also affect other healthy cells in the body. This includes peripheral nerves i.e., the nerves in your hands and feet.

Developing CIPN may cause:

Tingling or numbness

Pain or discomfort

Sensitivity to touch or temperature

Difficulty with fine movements (e.g, fastening buttons)

For some patients, these symptoms may continue after treatment has finished, while for others, symptoms may not appear until after chemotherapy has ended.

What is the Paxman Neuropathy System?

During your chemotherapy infusion, and for a short while before and afterwards, you will wear specially designed gloves and boots connected to a cooling system.

The system:

Gently cools your hands and feet

Applies light, rhythmic pressure to keep you comfortable

Maintains a steady temperature throughout treatment

The aim is to reduce the impact of chemotherapy on the nerves in your hands and feet.

What will happen during treatment?

The gloves and boots will be fitted before chemotherapy starts by a trained medical professional.

Healthcare staff will monitor you throughout. You may notice a cold sensation or gentle pressure – this becomes more comfortable as your treatment continues.

Prior to infusion, the system will begin cooling your hands and feet and run automatically through treatment.

Once chemotherapy infusion is complete, you will need to keep the gloves and boots on for a short period of time.

After a short while, your clinical team will then begin infusion of the chemotherapy drugs.

For your comfort, you may disconnect from the system for up to 10 minutes for bathroom breaks. The system will alert staff when it is time to reconnect.

What is the likelihood of CIPN prevention?

There are no guarantees that The Paxman Neuropathy System will completely prevent any CIPN symptoms from developing.

However, based on clinical evaluations, The Paxman Neuropathy System was found to reduce the risk of developing any CIPN symptoms by 70%. It also reduced the risk of developing severe symptoms, i.e., those that can have a life-changing impact on quality of life, by 95%.

CIPN is something I still live with every day. Ten years later, I’m still managing pain, burning sensations and numbness that affect even the simplest tasks. If we can prevent others from going through what I’ve gone through, it has the potential to change countless lives.
